In my house they are known as binkis. Or as my kids have called them, bink, nub, boo, plug(ok that was mine)
We use them, and so far everyone of my kids has LOVED them, and broke themselves of the binki habit. By 18 months Kinz would fall asleep with hers then later throw it out of her crib. We stopped giving it to her and it was never an issue. Brady has just turned 21 months, and he still loves his. He only has ONE left. It is blue, and he calls it boo. Jake and I made the decision to NOT take his binki away, for fear that he would regress, and steal the babies as soon as she was born. Plus in my opinion who cares if he has it. Yes maybe it's a little ridiculous to see a toddler walking around with one, but he sleeps with it only, and once and a while he goes in his room to get it when he's hanging at home. Lately he has been tossing his out of the crib too, so maybe he will eventually break himself of the binki like Kinz did, boys are always a little slower in the beggining anyway right? Whatever... Now Kaitlyn she LOVES her binki, but not the ones we bought and received for gifts, she loves the one from the hospital.
So we ended up purchasing a few more from wally-mart that were cute pink and purple. She falls asleep sucking to hers, and spits it out too. Lucky me? :)
(he was playing in the dirt.)
Most people ask me, "aren't you afraid it will screw up their teeth?" My reply of course is "did you know me as a kid? my teeth we AWFUL! bad genes have already cursed them! I'm planning on giving all my children braces anyway, so really I might as well enjoy the calming affect of a pacifier" and doot. that is my 2 cents on binkis.
oh except I must brag, call it luck, or chance but all 3 of my children sleep through the night.
Kinz 12 hours straight since 5 weeks of age, (and still til this day) Brady 15 hours straight of sleep since 9 weeks(still to this day, and a 3 hour nap!) and Kaitlyn 8 hours a night as of 8 weeks.(she is 11 weeks old) Binki helps? I think so. I must admit tho9ugh, my boobies are broken, so no breastmilk for my babies i KNOW the formula plays a huge part in why my babies sleep. So bonus sleep for me, but bummer on the goodness of breast milk (not to mention the weight loss for me...) oh well. Happy children raising ya'all!
